Clinical Observation of Acute Drug intoxication


Abstract
Two hundred and fifty cases of acute drug intoxication who were admitted to the Department of Internal Medicine, Seoul National University Hospital over the period 1963 to 1965 were analyzed,
The following, results were obtained:
1. Over one half of the cases were in the third decade and the next highest frequency was found in. the order of fourth, second and. fifth decades. The. overall sex incidence: was 1 male to 1.38 female¢¥ with a preponderance of female.
2. The monthly incidence was highest in May. Higher .frequency¢¥ was observed from late spring to early, summer (April to July) and during the winter months, the frequency was lower. ,
3. The most common of the intoxicating drugs was hypnotics and-in the rest of the cases, the drugs were; unknown, tranquilizer, or a combined intoxication, or- antimalarials in that order,
4. Most of the patients complained of inpairment of consciousness. Severe and moderate cases comprised 44% and 42.2% respectively and mild cases consisted of 13.8%
5. In some of the cases body temperature and blood pressure showed decreasing tendency, pulse and respiration were increased-and deep tendon reflex was decreased or, absent, and the pupillary light reaction disappeared, Mydriasis was seen in¢¥ many cases.
6. As to the hemograms, neutrophils were increased prominantly and WBC and sedimentation rate were increased in the majority of cases. Proteinuria and choluria¢¥ were observed in one -third of cases and total bilirubin was increased in 8 of 21 cases examined.
7. One half of the cases, who came to the hospital within two hours after the ingestion of the drugs recovered consciousness within 12 hours. As the time interval from the ingestion to the institution of treatment prolonged, more time was required before recovery of consciousness.
8. Complications were developed in 10.4% of the cases and one half of the complications were aspiration pneumonia.
9. The majority of cases were cured or improved with conservative treatment alone and only 6 cases (2.4%) expired.
